What years did you attend WAA?

Approx. 2017, I just know it was the summer between my freshman year of high school and 8th grade, and I graduated 8th grade in 2017.

What program(s) did you participate in at WAA?

Dramatics Fanatics with Peg Hoffmiller! I’d taken one class early in the summer, and if I remember correctly, it was at Woodlawn. Then she invited me back, free of charge, to the class in Rock Falls later that summer, at Centennial Park. I only remember the specific details because I couldn’t be at the final performance because I had an ear infection, bummer!!

How did WAA make a lasting impression and impact on you?

Oh gosh! It taught me how to push beyond my comfort zone. Before taking a class at Woodlawn, I would quite literally hide under tables whenever someone would try speaking to me, but Peg, and everyone else in that class, taught me how to not be afraid of failing during a scene, or making fun of yourself. Being able to put myself in another person’s shoes for a few minutes allowed me to better understand aspects of myself.

What areas of study did you pursue after your time at WAA?

I attended and recently graduated from Augustana College with a degree in Theatre Performance and Film! Since graduating high school, I’ve experienced many different aspects of theater, from acting, directing, stage combat, dialect work, intimacy work, improv, set design, costume design, lighting design, sound design, set building, immersive theater etc… Augustana has such a well rounded program, I was able to get hands-on experience in essentially anything I wanted to learn about!

What are your current arts related job/career?

I’m currently the Studio Manager at The Radar Free Press in Rock Falls! This job relates more to my film degree, but I’m still doing what I love, telling stories, albeit, just not live, ha! If you’ve seen a video we’ve published on our website, odds are I had my hands on it somehow, whether designing the motion graphics, directing the shoot, editing the video, being a production assistant, or being in the actual video!

Do you feel that your time at WAA is a direct reflection on your current position/career path?

Oh most definitely! As I mentioned before, if it weren’t for that single acting class, I would not have found my true passion in life, telling stories, which I get to do both in theater and as a filmmaker!

What years did you attend WAA?

2010 to Present

What program(s) did you participate in at WAA?

Theatre (Beauty and the Beast), Sewing, Cupcake Baking, Fashion Design, 2D and 3D Art, Rhythm Quest Rocks, Show Choir, Guitar Lessons, and currently Adult Mixed Genre Dance.

How did WAA make a lasting impression and impact on you?

I was never really into sports, but I loved the arts from a young age. Woodlawn gave me the chance to try out all kinds of creative things I was curious about. Some of them weren’t the right fit, but others, like music and culinary arts, really stuck with me. Woodlawn helped me discover what I’m passionate about, and I have nothing but good memories from my time there. I’m proud to look back on those moments, and I love that I still get to be a part of it through the adult programs. It’s always felt like a place where I could express myself and explore interests.

What areas of study did you pursue after your time at WAA?

I attended the University of Wisconsin–Platteville and earned my Bachelor of Arts in Music Education.

What is your current arts-related job/career?

I currently teach music in Rock Falls to Kindergarten through 3rd-grade students.

Do you feel that your time at WAA is a direct reflection of your current position/career path?

My time at WAA absolutely impacted my career choice. While Woodlawn wasn’t where my passion for music began, it was an important part of my path that helped me grow and prepare for what came next. I had the chance to learn from so many wonderful instructors in many areas of study, and each one showed me what an inspiring teacher looks like. Their love for the arts was so genuine. It poured out of everything they did. Every day, I aim to bring that same passion into my own teaching.

Children were able to have opportunities

Both of my children have attended Woodlawn Arts Pre-K and countless enriching educational artistic programs. It’s because of Woodlawn’s generous financial assistance that my children were able to have these opportunities. I am forever grateful to Woodlawn Arts Academy for all they have done for my family.

The learning is always endless

My family has greatly appreciated the learning opportunities provided by Woodlawn. The learning is always endless. We would be unable to afford the programs without the kindness of the scholarship program provided.

Thankful for programs like this

I don’t want money (or lack thereof) to prevent my daughters from doing whatever they want in life and I’m so thankful for programs like this allowing them to learn and discover who they want to become. Without the assistance we would never be able to afford these classes for our sweet babies. I can’t wait for my littlest to be big enough to join her big sister! Making friends, learning and simply just having something to do out of our usual routine has really turned Wren into the biggest ray of sunshine : )

 “Learn through play”

Because of this program we were able to send our oldest daughter to a preschool that we trusted but also that’s focus was to “learn through play.” We are excited for her next year of preschool and to see what other classes we can get our family enrolled in. This program has truly blessed our family.

WAA’s Preschool Program

For the 2021-22 school year we were able to send our oldest to WAA’s Preschool Program and are hopeful to do the same again with our youngest. Because of our careers they spend a lot of time surrounded by artists and the arts. It means a great deal to me that they get to have their first classroom experience in an art-focused environment.
